British Turntable Cottons on at Eden Project

Movement from British Turntable is helping to tell the story of cotton at the UK's renowned Eden Project in Cornwall.

Built to promote the understanding and responsible management of the vital relationship between plants, people and resources, the Eden Project brings the earth's ecology and environment to life. And with billions of tonnes of cotton being transported around the world form America, India and China to satisfy the public's addiction to one of the most comfortable and enduringly fashionable materials around, it was important to tell its remarkable story in a creative and entertaining way.

The exhibit's designer, Martin Matthews, decided to use turntables to revolve six 20-gallon steel drums - representing the large volume of pesticides used in the farming of cotton - to bring the story to life. Images of how cotton is used were printed onto fabric, which was then wrapped round the oil drums; a life-size soft sculpture of a washing machine and a 'Perspex' cube containing a world globe are mounted on top. Capping the lot is an enormous 'undies' mobile, providing balance in movement and, with the turntables connected to electronic timers so that they can be rotated at intervals, the whole exhibit can be choreographed for maximum effect.

Martin Matthews is delighted with the effect and the turntables' reliability, saying, "Your turntables ran continuously throughout the busiest period of the year and are still animating my exhibit successfully and without any problems. No repairs for me and a constant flow of happy visitors - all's well in the Garden of Eden!"

The B200 units used to create this stunning show were chosen from British Turntable's range of standard display movement, which now numbers more than 100 models. Movement in display is known to attract attention and British Turntable movement is used world wide in the heritage, retail display and exhibitions industries to add interest and excitement. The power of movement is particularly apparent from research carried out in the retail environment research, which shows it will increase sales by more than 30% over a static display (source: Point of Purchase Advertising International). Reliable, durable and versatile, British Turntable units are available for sale or hire throughout the world.
