Fashion on the Move with British Turntable

A temporary exhibition at the Ulster Museum has demonstrated how turntable movement can create a dynamic and exciting show, attracting visitors and focusing attention on the museum's extensive collection of historic and contemporary costume.

Three Mini Carousels and three ceiling mounted turntables supplied by British Turntable were central to the success of The Fashion Show, the main attraction in a summer season of art exhibitions featuring style, fashion and taste over the last three centuries.

Displayed in the museum's temporary exhibition gallery, effective use of wall graphics and video projections of catwalk shows combined with the turntable movement to create a theatrical and visually appealing experience.

"The exhibition has proved tremendously popular with visitors," says the museum's marketing officer, Paula Talbot. "Including three turntables at the main floor level meant that the mannequins could be viewed from all angles without the visitor having to walk round the exhibits. The designers also had the inspired idea to use three ceiling-mounted turntables, suspending dresses from them so that they appeared to revolve in mid-air - a stunning and attention-grabbing effect in such a large, high-ceilinged gallery."

This success in using movement at the Ulster Museum to attract visitors and increase footfall mirrors research carried out in the retail sector, which has shown that movement at the point of purchase can increase sales by more than 30% (source: Point of Purchase Advertising International).

The Mini Carousel, one of more than 100 standard display movement products in the British Turntable portfolio, is a particularly popular turntable unit because of its ability to display a wide range of goods and merchandise safely and cost-effectively. Extendable from 450 mm to 1500 mm in diameter, the turntable is supplied with 5 amp slip rings as standard, providing electrical power on the rotating platform for feature lighting or special effects. It can also be combined with other turntables to create more complex integrated combinations.

Ceiling mounted turntables are remarkably effective where space is at a premium as they extend the display options to areas not normally used. They are also extremely popular for information signage and to highlight special promotions in the retail environment; used in conjunction with attractive graphics or lighting they help to draw customers or visitors to less-heavily frequented areas of the museum or store.
